Romy-Krystal Cutler
She / HerSewing Hobbyist + Mama + Colour Lover
Hi! I’m Romy-Krystal. I’m ex data analyst that became a stay at home mama just over 4 years ago when my son Northern joined us. I’m 1st generation Australian. My dad is Fijian Indian and my mother was born in Argentina but is Scottish, French, Italian and Uruguayan background. My genetic makeup can be seen in nearly everything I make. Predominantly through colours and prints. I’m a happy person by nature so I gravitate towards making clothes that are well…happy! I’ve never fit in anywhere so it makes sense that I never found what I wanted in clothing stores. The last straw was when hemlines were not where I liked them to be so my husband encouraged me to start sewing. 5 years later and here I am making things that I would only have seen in my dreams. I couldn’t even read a sewing pattern when I started but through many tears, tantrums and husband hugs I’m here now. I have 168 dresses and counting but I sew whatever my mind can muster.
What influence does music have in your life as a creative?:
Music has always been a big part of my life. It also has a direct correlation to my mood and my memories. When music is on I go into my own world and nothing can penetrate my bubble. In regards to my creativity, there’s not much of a relationship between what I’m listening to and what idea pops into my head. Music when I sew fulfills two purposes only: speed and dancing. I love dancing while I sew and it’s very much party time when my playlist turns on but it is also extremely fast paced. I sew fast and my music matches that pace. That being said my music is a spectrum. From old school funk and disco all the way to indie folk and anything in between.
Tell us about your playlist:
Each song on my playlist has a memory attached to it. All happy, joyful memories. Each has a certain degree of cheekiness with a smidge of butt shaking. When I sew it’s about letting go and being free and I do that best when I’m shaking what my mama gave me. In this case my dad but that’s a technicality. I’ve never followed rules when it comes to my personality so it makes sense that there’s no real theme to my playlist aside from having a good time! There’s also some smoother, subtle songs thrown in because everything needs balance and I need those precious minutes to re-energise.
