Lisa Woolridge

she/her
Knitter & sewist

I grew up mostly involved in athletics – got my doctorate in Physical Therapy and joined the Army. My sense of self shifted, and I found most of my happiness in the world of making. Crafting has been with me since I was very young, but I didn’t set them as constants in my life until adulthood. I’m a nomad, but tend to reside in the knitting and sewing spaces. Working with my hands is a gift, and I feel like it’s like a contribution to history. My favorite sews are ones that have been inspired by something I’ve seen and wanted to challenge myself to replicate. Making is such a definition of who I am now, it feels like I’ve finally found myself.

What influence does music have in your life as a creative?:

I unintentionally consider music an indulgence when I’m working – like wine when I’m cooking – only because I’m usually in a rush to finish things before the baby wakes up or needs me. When I do find the space to include music, it’s a total atmosphere. It feeds happiness into the process, so it’s something I should make the intention to practice more.

Tell us about your playlist:

I like to think of this playlist as cool mom jams. Time is both suspended and light speed as a mother. It’s so easy to get steamrolled by the drum of busyness and constancy of being needed by someone else. The act of making things, the time for making things, all shifts. There are blissful highs and crushing lows. This playlist is a bit of a shadow to those thoughts. I’m very into gloomy girl songs, but I also included some lush tunes that were on my labor soundtrack. I usually click with a song right away, especially if it has a low-key drop or rich beat. Some of these songs are ballads to motherhood – gains, losses, echoes of this realm I’m still trying to navigate. Others just are. From my vibes to yours – I hope you find the time you need for you!
