Maya Jacobs
she / herMaker, sewist, art historian
Hi! I’m Maya, born and still live in Belgium, and I’ve been sewing since I was 12. I learnt it from my grandma, who was a seamstress herself and had a big creative influence on teenage me. I rediscovered my love for sewing 3 years ago. I am currently working towards a more cohesive wardrobe by either sewing and/or thrifting vintage Belgian designer pieces.
What influence does music have in your life as a creative?:
I remember there was always music playing in my childhood home. My dad was in a band, and I vividly remember him and my mom dancing around the house from time to time. Even now, my mom and I could be sitting together knitting and sewing, and my dad would sit somewhere practicing his guitar.
Music has always been a driving force throughout my life. I have very specific and overly curated Spotify playlists for every mood. I’m that person, yes.
When sewing, I either need something quiet/minimal/ambient (or a podcast) to completely zone out or a very high-energy playlist for zooming around my studio. Moving around from the sewing machine, to the overlocker, to the ironing board, back to the sewing machine and on and on and on! I find myself tapping along with my foot still on the foot control messing up my stitches too often.
Tell us about your playlist:
This playlist is the high-energy one I was talking about earlier. I recommend listening to the songs in the order they’re in, for an optimal listening experience! 🙂
I picked the Twin Peaks soundtrack as a warm welcoming tune to all listeners. You’ll find a mix of new wave, post punk and rock in this list. I tried to incorporate some of my favorite Belgian artists such as Whispering Sons, 2 Belgen, Red Zebra and Raketkanon.
In the middle I tried to build up to some good high-energy songs, perfect for stomping around in your sewing space! Towards the end of the playlist I added some more ambient songs to cool down to.
