Lydia Morrow

She / Her
Designer and Maker

I’ve been making my own clothes and toys since I was 5 years old, and still feel like I’m doing it the same way today. I try to bring the fluidity, impulsiveness, and playfulness that I’ve had since childhood into my practice of making and designing- whether its for my art work, clients, or personal projects. I knit, embroider, sew, draw, and crochet, but I hate doing things ‘the right way’- I call myself a ‘fashion clown’ since, in all honesty, as a disabled and neurodivergent person, my way of working is always a little bit funny, absurd, and confusing. I also like to think it gives people a lot of joy and entertainment and aesthetic pleasure though!

What influence does music have in your life as a creative?:

Music has been an essential part of my life since day 1. My dad was a singer in a punk band, so some of my earliest memories are of being on stage at shows, and getting to hang out with musician friends of my parents who I admired a lot. When I was a kid and into my teens, I taught myself the basics of a few instruments and would spend countless hours writing and recording little songs. My childhood and adolescence were almost entirely characterised by me listening to music while making things or drawing. I’ve always felt with particular songs a ‘heart pang’ urge to create.

Tell us about your playlist:

For this playlist I tried to think back to as many songs as possible that gave me that ‘heart pang’ I was talking about. It’s a bit about nostalgia, the songs that made me recognise the uncontrollable unarguable fact that I need to be creative, and that drove my pre-teen to late teen years, where everything was felt so much more intensely. These songs help me access that inspiration today and even though a lot of them aren’t what I’d choose as much now, I listen to them and feel transported to sitting drawing on the floor with freezing hands while my back got just a tiny bit burnt by the crappy radiator in my teenage bedroom. I’m sure there are so many more- I’l add them as I find them- and I’ve put in a couple from more recently for good measure, but anyway I hope u enjoy!
