Coco Wolfgang

Visual artist, maker, and sewist

By day I’m a faculty member in the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, USA. I’ve been a maker (mostly photography and printmaking) my whole life and an arts educator for 19 years. I live in Richmond with my wife, Erin the Librarian, and our two dogs Wallace Luckdragon (Wally) and Lucinda Raelene (Luray).
I sew most of my own clothes. My personal style is simple: never met a pair of soft pants I didn’t like. Boxy tops are my jam. Dresses over pants has been my signature look since I was a teenager.

What influence does music have in your life as a creative?:

I’ve been loving and playing music since I was a child, so making things with my hands to a soundtrack has always been a part of my creative practice. Like many folx, my music interests are deeply influenced by my childhood and formative experiences. I’ve spent most of my life in the deep south of the USA. I love old country (particularly Dolly, Emmylou, Loretta, and Willie), folk and Americana. I love Tom Petty. I love 90’s indie college radio. I love New Wave. I love queer womxn singer/songwriters. I unironically love hair metal from the 70s and 80s. My father instilled in me an abiding love for ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, and the Beach Boys. I dunno. I’m all over the place. But it works. Our only remaining tape deck is in my studio, which we affectionately refer to as #cassettedeckstudio, along with what’s left of my tape collection. It’s a weird mix of 90’s alternative and bluegrass and metal. Makes for interesting work…

Tell us about your playlist:

This is a pretty good snapshot of what my life is like right now: A little bit hopeful. I little bit of teen-era angst. Lots of things you can sing along to.
